Bilbo Baggins is a quiet and peaceful hobbit who lives in the Shire. One day, the wizard Gandalf visits him and invites him on an adventure. Soon, thirteen dwarves arrive at Bilbo's house. Their leader, Thorin Oakenshield, wants to take back his people's lost mountain home, Erebor, which was taken over by the dragon Smaug. Bilbo reluctantly joins them on the dangerous journey. Along the way, they face trolls, goblins, orcs, and giant wolves. Bilbo also gets separated from the group and meets a strange creature named Gollum in a cave. There, he finds a magical ring that turns him invisible a ring that becomes very important in The Lord of the Rings. At first, the dwarves don't believe in Bilbo's courage, but he proves himself by helping them escape danger. The film ends with the group still far from the Lonely Mountain, but Bilbo starts to become a true hero.
