#earn activity I loved her nine years — lived with her five — and we were planning to get married next year on our 10th anniversary. She’s 28, I’m 34. We built each other up, I helped her find her feet, she kept me moving when I wanted to stop. For a long time it felt like we were just two people who became a small, steady world.
Then my younger sister got pregnant, gave birth, and passed away from complications. The house that used to hold three generations of noise now holds a newborn’s cry and my parents’ tired faces. My parents are in their late 60s; the baby’s father left when he found out about the pregnancy. I promised them I’d be the one to raise my niece. I told my girlfriend we’d take her in and love her like our own.
Her answer broke me. She said she couldn’t marry me anymore — not because she didn’t love me but because she’s terrified of childbirth. She has tokophobia and for her it was paralyzing. She told me she never signed up to become a mother for anyone but us, asked me to look for the baby’s father for support, and walked away. We broke up. She left a sweater that still smells like her, a ring I never had the chance to put on, and an empty side of the bed.
I’m trying to keep going – I work, I pay for a caregiver so my niece gets the care she needs, I help my parents carry the days. For months I’ve sent quiet messages — “Did you mean it?” — and most times there’s silence or a flat no. I’m raising a child I didn’t expect to be mine, and I’m waiting, stupidly and stubbornly, for the knock that might never come. Our house is full of small life and a big absence, and some nights I don’t know which hurts more.
Task: 1. As a reader/commenter: What’s right here? What went wrong? Be fair and concrete. 2. Put yourself in the girlfriend’s shoes: How would you react? Would you do the same? Explain briefly why or why not. 3. Put yourself in the guy’s shoes: What would you do differently if it were you? What pressures and responsibilities would you feel? Thank you all so much for stepping into this space with such honesty and care.
Reading all of your replies—your kindness, your tough truths, your empathy, and even your bold opinions—made this heavy story feel a little less lonely than I thought it would. You didn’t just give me comments; you gave me new ways to see my own choices, her choices, and the messy, complicated line between love and responsibility.
To everyone who shared your takes on what was right, what went wrong, and what could have done differently: thank you for not rushing to judge but for choosing to sit with the gray instead. You reminded me that not every heartbreak has a clean villain, just people trying to survive different weights.
Thank you to everyone who imagined yourselves in her shoes or mine, and still tried to answer with nuance, not just anger or pity. Those perspectives will stay with me longer than I probably realize.
#HeartHeavyHandsFull but today, these hands also hold gratitude for all of you who showed up, read, reflected, and replied. This conversation means more than you know. 💙
I’m pleased to announce that all rewards have been distributed to eligible entries. Although I had a maximum of 10 capped entries, I received 11 submissions. One participant shared a brief point of view but did not adhere to the task and attachment guidelines. In recognition of his involvement, I will still reward him 50,000 MLX.
Out of the remaining 10 participants, only 5 adhered to the guidelines fully, while the other 5 incurred deductions for not following the clear task instructions and attachment requirements. Consequently, the 5 eligible participants will share a total of 260,000 MLX, which has been derived from the deductions.
Please remember that it was essential to follow the specified hashtag format on your attachment ( DO NOT CAPITALIZE EVERYTHING ), provide what were asked from the tasks and attach a photo of your right hand with an open palm and the back visible. If you have questions about where you may have gone wrong, I encourage you to take a moment to reread the guidelines.
The 260,000 MLX will be split equally among the following participants, each receiving a bonus of 52,000 MLX:
