Good evening, friends! 🦜 Let me talk a little about our Mauritius' Green Survivor!
Say hello to the Echo Parakeet , one of Mauritius’ most special birds. It is endemic to Mauritius . Once widespread across Mauritius, the species suffered a dramatic decline because of habitat loss, introduced predators such as rats and monkeys, and competition for food and nesting sites.
By the 1970s and 1980s, fewer than 20 known Echo Parakeets remained, making it one of the rarest parrots in the world.
Then the conservation heroes stepped in! They protected nests, rescued and raised chicks, controlled predators, restored habitat, provided food, and installed artificial nest boxes.
And the parakeets? At first, they basically said: “A nest box? No thanks. I prefer my tree!” 😂
Thankfully, they eventually changed their minds. After decades of conservation work, the population recovered to hundreds of birds , and in 2019 the species was downlisted from Endangered to Vulnerable .
From fewer than 20 birds to hundreds, that’s quite a comeback story! So the next time you see an Echo Parakeet, remember, you’re looking at a true Mauritian conservation superstar. 😅
You can spot them mainly in Black River Gorges, Ferney, and Ebony Forest in Chamarel. 🦜🌿

Happy Thursday, my fabulous friends! It's already afternoon and I just reached home.☀️
The Père Laval pilgrimage may have been celebrated on the 8th and 9th of September, but the pilgrims are still coming, day and night, and you can definitely feel it on the roads! So today, I’m moving like a turtle, and apparently my car has decided to join me. 🐢😂 At this rate, I’m not driving anymore, I’m slowly becoming part of the pilgrimage!
For those who may not know, Père Jacques-Désiré Laval was a French missionary who came to Mauritius from France in 1841. He devoted his life to helping the poor, caring for the sick, and serving the newly freed people of Mauritius. He became known as the “Apostle of Mauritius” and remains deeply loved by people across the island.
Père Laval was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1979 , and John Paul II later visited his tomb at Sainte-Croix in 1989.
And here’s another fascinating detail: his remains have never left Sainte-Croix since his death in 1864. They continue to rest in his tomb there, which remains an important place of pilgrimage.
So, while the roads may be moving at turtle speed, it’s actually quite special to see so many people still making their way to Sainte-Croix with faith and devotion. Some pilgrims walk for many kilometres from different corners of the island to reach Sainte-Croix, so when I’m complaining about moving at turtle speed in my car, I really have nothing to complain about! 🐢😂
As for me, I’ll just keep crawling along patiently. 🐢😂 By lunchtime, I have moved only a few kilometres!

It seems our beautiful island had a rather unusual VIP visitor this week! 😄🦭
A southern elephant seal decided to skip the usual tourist spots and make a surprise appearance on the beach. Talk about choosing a beautiful holiday destination! 😂🏖️
Naturally, this unexpected guest attracted plenty of attention, and the authorities quickly took the necessary steps to ensure our very sleepy visitor could relax peacefully, safely, and without being disturbed by curious onlookers. 🌊✨
Mauritius welcomes visitors from all over the world, but this one arrived without a passport! 😂
