Are you always on?
I was. And I did not realize how mentally exhausting it had become.
Somewhere along the way, I had given everyone unlimited access to me. Every call felt like it needed answered. Every text needed a response. Every email deserved attention. I had conditioned myself to believe being available meant being dependable.
Eventually I realized I had lost something important.
Disconnection.
That space where nobody needs anything from you. Where there are no questions to answer, problems to solve, or expectations to meet. A place where your mind can simply be present.
What really created the imbalance was my expectation that others would give me the same access I gave them. But that was not their responsibility. It was mine. I created the expectation because I assumed people would respond the way I did.
They will not.
And that is okay.
But here was the bigger realization. I also needed to stop expecting myself to always be me.
I did not have to respond immediately. I did not have to treat every notification like an emergency. I could disconnect and the world would keep moving.
And it did.
The important things still got done. The people who truly needed me still had me. But I began protecting the space between everyone else’s needs and my own energy.
You do not owe everyone unlimited access to you.
Sometimes protecting your energy means disconnecting long enough to remember that you have a choice where it goes.
Your energy is valuable.
Spend it intentionally.
