John Carpenter doesn't just direct ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK (1981)… He weaponises it into a lean, mean survival thriller, set in a ‘futuristic’ walled-off Manhattan turned maximum-security madhouse.
Kurt Russell's character of Snake Plissken , complete with eyepatch, growl, and zero fucks to give, is dropped into this urban jungle with 24 hours to rescue the President or die from neck bombs. No heroic speeches, just pure endurance: dodging cannibal gangs, minefields, gladiator pits, and Isaac Hayes' Cadillac-riding Duke, all while the throbbing synth score keeps the tension dialled to eleven.
Resourcefulness wins over firepower, cynicism over hope, in a decaying New York that feels more alive (and deadly) than most wilderness nightmares. This is Carpenter at his grimmest and sharpest.
