My pick this month is ANGEL HEART (1987), a psychological thriller that takes you on a dark and haunting journey through the depths of identity and self-discovery. The film's central theme revolves around Harry Angel's relentless quest to uncover the truth about his own existence, leading to a mind-bending twist you won't see coming
Set in 1950s New York, Mickey Rourke shines as Harry Angel, a detective tasked by the enigmatic Louis Cyphre (Robert De Niro) with finding a certain John Liebling, a crooner known under his stage name “Johnny Favourite”. Harry embarks on a tumultuous journey and uncovers disturbing and unsettling aspects of his own past. His search becomes an exploration of his own identity.
Director Alan Parker's atmospheric visuals and Rourke's gripping performance create a chilling and thought-provoking experience. The unexpected twist at the end is a masterstroke. Combined with an interesting soundtrack (I still have the CD lying around somewhere…), if you enjoy psychological thrillers with some supernatural elements, you gotta see this one!
