On to my pick of this month… MEAN MACHINE (2001) is a gritty, raucous British sports comedy that swaps the American football of its inspiration, The Longest Yard (1974) , for the beautiful game of football, commonly known as ‘soccer’ in the United States and Canada.
Directed by Barry Skolnick and produced by Matthew Vaughn, this 2001 cult gem stars Vinnie Jones as Danny ‘Mean Machine’ Meehan, a disgraced ex-England football captain thrown into prison after a drunken brawl. Tasked by the sleazy warden (David Hemmings) to coach the guards' team, Danny instead rallies a motley crew of inmates, including a volatile monk (Jason Statham in an early, hilarious role) and a bumbling doc (David Kelly), for a high-stakes match against their jailers.
The film leans hard into its rough-and-tumble charm, blending crude prison banter, slapstick violence, and surprisingly authentic football sequences filmed at real UK grounds. Jones, a former pro footballer, brings raw physicality, while Statham steals scenes with his unhinged energy. The humour is unpolished—think Guy Ritchie meets a pub brawl—but it lands for fans of cheeky British wit. Though the plot feels familiar and characters are thin, the climactic match delivers laughs and tension, earning its 51% Rotten Tomatoes score. At 99 minutes, it’s a lean, fun ride for football fans and anyone craving an underdog tale with a side of anarchy.
You need to add the title of your movie here as well to qualify for the raffle draw! In any case, Main Hoon Shahid Afridi (2013) has already been picked.
