THE 13th WARRIOR is based on “Eaters of the Dead”, a 1974 novel by Michael Crichton. The story combines two intriguing sources: the real-life adventure of Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan, an Arab emissary and poet who travelled north to the Viking lands in the 10th century and the Old English epic poem “Beowulf”.

During an encounter with a gang of Norsemen, Ahmed (played by Antonio Banderas) is appointed as the thirteenth warrior and must join the group of adventurous Vikings in returning to their mother land to defend a village against a tribe of monstrous flesh eating people called the Wendol. Ahmed’s a poet, not a fighter, but he quickly learns to wield a broadsword. In the process, the fearless Vikings learn as much about the courageous Arab, as he learns about them, their language, customs and their military skills.

The film masterfully portrays his assimilation into a foreign world and the director's approach to depict the main character's acquisition of the language spoken by the Norsemen is a stroke of brilliance – instead of having to listen to the protagonist learning to speak the Norse language, we slowly but surely start understanding the band of Vikings as their language turns into English. You'll have to watch the movie to understand what I mean!

I know the critics called it a flop, but I disagree – I found this a very entertaining film and I thought the main actors all did a great job!
